The Keeper of Sükûnet was born from one of those quiet encounters that stayed with me long after I left.

While traveling through Turkey, I found myself drawn to an elderly man standing in a doorway, completely absorbed in a simple moment of his own. His gaze was lowered toward the object in his hands. He wasn't looking at me, and he wasn't performing for anyone. I was simply witnessing him being present.

There was something about that moment that felt incredibly honest.

I wanted to preserve that feeling in paint.

The warm sunlight falling across his face and hands brings attention to the lines and textures that speak to a life lived, while the cool blues and muted grays surrounding him create a quiet sense of stillness. His vivid red turban became the visual anchor of the portrait—a burst of color that carries its own quiet strength.

The title, The Keeper of Sükûnet, comes from the feeling at the heart of the painting. Sükûnet speaks to stillness, calm, and tranquility.

This painting is part of my Turkish Delights series, a body of work inspired by the people and fleeting encounters I've experienced through travel. I'm less interested in documenting a place than I am in remembering how a person or a moment made me feel.

Sometimes the most meaningful encounters aren't the grand ones.

They're the quiet ones.

The ones that ask us to slow down, pay attention, and simply be present.

I hope The Keeper of Sükûnet offers that same feeling to whoever eventually lives with him.
